Two giant Pandas have joined San Diego Zoo. Xin Bao and Yun Chaun are the first giant pandas to enter the U.S. in 21 years, and they have joined the over 12,000 animals who already call the famous zoo home.

A Panda’s Guide to San Diego: In Q4, the San Diego Zoo unveiled Panda Ridge, the new home for giant pandas Xin Bao and Yun Chaun. These are the first pandas to enter the US in 21 years, and as of now, San Diego is just one of two places in the US where guests can see the bears in person. The San Diego region has been ripe with panda-monium since the weeks leading up to their arrival and for out-of-towners coming to see the bears, here’s how to enjoy San Diego as we imagine a panda would.

Stay

Pandas know how to relax, which is why they’d stay at a spot that prioritises tranquillity above all else—preferably one with a great spa and pool.

  • A San Diego classic, the Hotel Del Coronado is a great spot to unwind amongst the sand and ocean waves.
  • The Estancia La Jolla knows relaxation, and they’re sharing in the panda excitement! Check out the panda memorabilia stocked in the gift shop and keep an eye out for their exclusive panda-themed cocktail.
  • Inspired by the lush landscapes of the Polynesian islands, the Catamaran Resort truly channels the spirit of Zen in everything, from its decor to its location on the water.

Eat

We imagine a panda might be eager to enjoy a great meal from one of the many delicious spots around San Diego.

  • Located in San Diego’s pan-Asian Convoy District, Dumpling Inn and Shanghai Saloon is a local favourite, serving up authentic Chinese food since 1994.
  • Harumama has several locations around San Diego, serving up noodles and their signature animal-shaped bao buns. You might be able to get ahold of their limited-edition panda bao buns!
  • In addition to a hearty diet of bamboo, pandas enjoy all kinds of fruits and vegetables, which is why we recommend checking out the seasonal options at the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market.

Play

Giant pandas are known for their playfulness, as is San Diego! Here are some ways to play like a panda around the city.

  • Take trips to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park to meet the pandas and their new neighbours while learning about ongoing conservation efforts.
  • Stop by The Nat to have some more animal-themed fun and learn about San Diego’s natural flora and fauna.
  • Channel your inner panda at Kate Sessions Park, where there’s plenty of space to tumble around, or even practise some Kung Fu.

Do

Round out your panda-themed San Diego experience with a stop at one of the region’s rich cultural institutions.

  • Visit the nation’s largest bamboo garden at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas.
  • Learn about Chinese history at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum and take its Asian Pacific Historic District Walking Tour.
  • Stop by Balboa Park and check out the House of China to catch a cultural performance and study up on Chinese culture.
