The ultra-luxury cruise line Silversea has made waves with the arrival of its pioneering new ship, the Silver Nova, in Alaska. Marking its first journey to the region, the Silver Nova has embarked on a series of immersive seven-day voyages, starting from May 9 and continuing through September 5, 2024.

The ship’s inaugural season in Alaska is not just a milestone for Silversea but also introduces the innovative S.A.L.T. program to the region. This program is designed to connect guests with the local culinary culture in unprecedented ways, offering immersive experiences that extend both onboard and ashore.

Over the summer and autumn, the Silver Nova will undertake 18 voyages, providing travellers with two distinct itinerary options. One of the highlighted voyages, from Vancouver to Seward (Anchorage, Alaska), running from June 20-27, promises an exploration of Ketchikan, the salmon capital of the world. Here, guests can delve into the region’s fishing and logging history with a visit to a historic cannery and a logger show.

Another notable journey from Seward back to Vancouver, scheduled for July 25-August 1, offers a wild adventure through the land of bears and icy landscapes. This voyage promises encounters with the diverse wildlife of the Inside Passage. It includes unique experiences such as a champagne toast at a picturesque waterfall and views of the majestic Hubbard Glacier.

The S.A.L.T. program stands for Sea and Land Taste and is Silversea’s award-winning culinary enrichment initiative. It allows guests to travel deeper into the heart of Alaska through various gastronomic experiences. The S.A.L.T. Kitchen onboard the Silver Nova will serve local dishes and delicacies, such as Cured Duck Breast with Alaskan Frybread, Alaskan Salmon Pie, Venison Ravioli with Wild Mushroom, and the iconic Baked Alaska.

Additionally, the S.A.L.T. Lab will host a “Wild Salmon: An Alaskan Way of Life” class where guests can learn various ways to prepare salmon. In the evenings, the S.A.L.T. Lab transforms into the S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table, an intimate dining experience featuring local ingredients and reimagined Alaskan dishes.

“We’re delighted to celebrate the inauguration of S.A.L.T. in Alaska,” said Adam Sachs, Director of S.A.L.T., Silversea. “The program will enable our guests to connect meaningfully with the region through bespoke, enriching culinary experiences. From exploring the best ways to prepare wild local salmon in S.A.L.T. Lab classes designed by experts to immersive experiences ashore, the range of culinary experiences will provide a unique lens through which our guests can deep dive into the local culture.”

The Nova Class: Redefining Luxury Cruising

The Nova-class ships, including the Silver Nova and its soon-to-launch sister ship Silver Ray, are a testament to the Royal Caribbean Group’s dedication to responsible vacation experiences. These ships exceed energy efficiency standards by 40%, showcasing a commitment to sustainability. Guests aboard can indulge in luxury with new venues, suite options, the Otium wellness program, and the S.A.L.T. culinary program’s latest addition, the S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table. The design of these ships emphasizes connection with the environment, featuring extensive exterior glass and outward-facing venues for an immersive experience.

Supporting Alaskan Port Communities

Silversea’s commitment extends beyond the seas to the port communities in Alaska. Initiatives like the Ketchikan Salmon Walk, developed in partnership with the Tongass Historical Museum, offer guests an educational journey through the salmon’s life cycle. The walk features art from acclaimed artists and upgraded amenities, enhancing the visitor experience.

The Royal Caribbean Group’s local sourcing strategy provides guests with authentic Alaskan products and experiences, thanks to partnerships with local businesses like Skagway Spirits and Seafood Producers Cooperative. This approach enriches the guest experience and bolsters the local economy.

Furthermore, the company’s renewed support for the Sitka Sound Science Center’s Scientists in the Schools program reflects a dedication to education and community engagement. This initiative brings science to life for students, fostering a love for learning and the environment.

As the Silver Nova sails through Alaska, it’s not just the breathtaking views that capture hearts but also the ship’s profound impact on the environment and local communities.
