This incredible oceanfront geothermal lagoon has opened in IcelandAndrea Smith

A new oceanfront geothermal lagoon has recently opened in Iceland, allowing guests to relax in waters that blend into the sea.

Inspired by Iceland’s long-standing spa culture, Sky Lagoon, located in Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, aims to provide a restorative spa-like ritual that is rooted in Icelandic tradition. It is a manmade lagoon with an unobstructed 70m infinity edge, producing a visual effect that sees it blending into the ocean landscape. The lagoon offers a seven-step spa experience called The Ritual, which combines warm and cold water, warm steam, dry heat and fresh air.

Its design elements are influenced by Icelandic culture and modeled after its turf houses, with deep insulation for the cold season and moss roofs. It’s home to the Lagoon Bar, located in the side of a cave at the far edge of the lagoon, the Sky Café and the Smakk Bar, a restaurant that serves food inspired by Iceland’s traditional dishes. The lagoon offers guests the chance to enjoy unobstructed views of the Atlantic, as well as the opportunity to catch colourful sunsets, northern lights and dark sky views.

Situated close to the capital Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon can cater for up to 3000 visitors per day but children under 12 are not permitted.

International travelers, including those from the US, can now visit Iceland once they can demonstrate proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Back in March, it become the first country in the EU/Schengen area to allow entry to vaccinated passengers from anywhere in the world. It is also one of the countries on the green list for English travelers.

Further information on vaccinations, quarantine and the country’s entry regulations are available from the Government of Iceland’s official website here. Find more information about Sky Lagoon here.
