In a bold move that underscores its ambition to become one of the world’s largest carriers, Turkish Airlines has entered discussions with Boeing for a staggering order of 250 aircraft. This revelation came from none other than the airline’s Chairman, Ahmet Bolat, during the International Air Travel Association’s (IATA) annual general meeting.

On June 4, 2024, Bolat spoke candidly with journalists about the ongoing negotiations, including talks on the cost of engines for an impressive fleet of 150 Boeing 737 MAXs and 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Bloomberg’s reports suggest that the order could expand to include an additional 25 737 MAXs, bringing the potential total to a quarter of a thousand.

This news follows a substantial order placed with Airbus in December 2023 for 230 aircraft, including the A350-900s, A350-1000s, and A350Fs. “We finished with Airbus; we have ordered 385 aircraft; some are fixed, and some are options,” Bolat shared with Gulf News. The decision to exercise these options with Airbus will be strategic and anticipated to unfold over the next three to four years.

Chairman Bolat’s strategy to ‘split the risk’ between the American manufacturer and its European counterpart, Airbus, is a well-thought-out approach to mitigate potential production issues. ‘Boeing has some production problems, which might happen to Airbus sometime later. Therefore, we want to mitigate the risks by using both products available in the market,’ Bolat explained. This careful risk management approach demonstrates the airline’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted fleet expansion.

While discussions with Boeing are still in their infancy, with no set deadline for a final agreement, Turkish Airlines’ vision is clear. The airline aims to operate a fleet of over 800 aircraft within the next decade, a significant leap from its current fleet of 455 Boeing and Airbus jets.

Turkish Airlines’ proactive stance in fleet expansion is not just about numbers; it’s a testament to their unwavering commitment to providing unparalleled service and connectivity. As they navigate the complexities of the aviation industry, their strategy of diversifying their fleet with both Boeing and Airbus aircraft positions them to soar to new heights, ready to meet the demands of the future head-on. This customer-centric approach is at the heart of their fleet expansion strategy, ensuring their passengers’ needs are always met.
